Todays Discussion-Income Tax

Todays discussion; Is it really necessary to tax Individuals income? Income Tax was first levied in 1862 to support a War (The Civil War) It was eliminated in 1872 and revived in 1894. When 1913 came around the 16th. Amendment made the "dreaded" income tax permanent. The IRS code and additions and deletions to the tax code has been changed many times since then. Mandatory withholding from one's paycheck came about in 1943

It seems that War was the necessary reason to raise additional money to support the high expense of losing lives and doing battle. It is my opinion that this is the primary reason for our Government to exist. Not for war but to protect the property and lives of the American People.

The problems is that the Government has grown far more than our forefathers wanted. I think it could well be argued that Individual Income tax is unfair and is not necessary. It is very hard for me to digest that the government can throw you into jail for not giving your hard earned money to them. It just wreaks of why we became Independent from England.

With the burden of tax laws upon everyone's shoulders there has to be a simpler way. I have always maintained that an across the board 1% paid by each individual and every Corporation would be fair treatment for both the American Citizen and the Government that presides over us.

What is your opinion for todays discussion?

1% sounds fair, However I would rather have a tax on consumable items by the federal Government.Since a lot of people drink beer and other alcoholic beverages, it would be quite a source of income if the Government taxed that rather than our income
